Machine Learning Engineers commonly work with engineers who maintain production systems. Their focus is more than academic, it is making data products work successfully in production. This can include understanding how a data pipeline can go stale or become compromised and finding solutions.

Machine learning Engineers should have proficient skills in computer science fundamentals and programming, understand probability and statistics as well as the techniques that are derived from it, comprehend data modeling and evaluation and be able to apply machine learning algorithms and libraries effectively.
